Nagqu Horse Racing Festival Tour

8 Days

Experience the Most Magnificent Celebration on the Northern Tibetan Plateau

Welcome to Nagqu—the “North Tibet Grassland” and the heart of the vast, windswept plateau that stretches toward the horizon in every direction. At an average elevation of over 4,500 meters, Nagqu is the largest prefecture in Tibet, a land of nomadic herders, shimmering lakes, and a sky so vast it seems to touch the earth.

Every August, this remote region transforms as tens of thousands of Tibetan nomads converge on the grasslands surrounding Nagqu Town for the Nagqu Horse Racing Festival—the most important and spectacular annual event in northern Tibet. For one week, the landscape becomes a temporary city of thousands of colourful tents, painted with images of Buddhas and Buddhist symbols, stretching for miles across the grassland.

The Nagqu Horse Racing Festival has a history dating back over a millennium. It traces its origins to the 8th century, when the Gar family ruled Tibet in the name of the Tubo Kingdom’s kings, and to ancient military reviews of the Tubo tribes. Today, this tradition has evolved into a vibrant celebration of nomadic culture, equestrian skill, and community gathering that has been inscribed on the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Here, you will witness the legendary horsemanship of the Tibetan nomads—riders performing breathtaking feats at full gallop, snatching hada scarves from the ground, demonstrating precision archery on horseback, and competing in races that test both speed and endurance. Beyond the races, you’ll experience wrestling matches, stone-lifting competitions, yak racing, Tibetan opera performances, and the spectacular display of traditional costumes as families arrive in their finest heirloom jewellery and most exquisite traditional dress.

This journey begins and ends in Lhasa, the sacred capital of Tibet, allowing you to acclimatise gradually to the high altitude while exploring Tibet’s most revered cultural treasures before venturing north to the vast grasslands. Whether you’re a culture enthusiast, a photographer seeking unparalleled subjects, or simply a traveller in search of one of the Tibetan Plateau’s most authentic and spectacular celebrations, the Nagqu Horse Racing Festival promises an experience you will carry with you forever.
