Lhasa Shoton (Yogurt) Festival Tour

8 Days

Witness the Grand Unveiling of the Giant Thangka at the “Opera Festival of Tibet”

Welcome to Lhasa during the most vibrant and spectacular time of the year—the Shoton Festival. Known as the “Yogurt Festival” or “Tibetan Opera Festival,” this is the largest and most famous annual celebration on the Tibetan Plateau, a dazzling fusion of ancient religious ritual, lively communal celebration, and breathtaking artistic expression.

The word “Shoton” literally means “Yogurt Banquet” in Tibetan. The festival’s origins date back to the 11th century, when laypeople would offer yogurt to monks emerging from their strict summer meditation retreats, during which they were forbidden to leave the monasteries to avoid harming insects. Over centuries, this simple act of offering evolved into a grand cultural event. During the reign of the Fifth Dalai Lama, traditional Tibetan opera was added to the celebrations, transforming the “Yogurt Banquet” into the “Tibetan Opera Festival” and moving its centre from Drepung Monastery to the summer palace of Norbulingka.

Today, the Shoton Festival is the single most anticipated event in Lhasa. Its undisputed highlight is the spectacular Giant Thangka Unveiling Ceremony at Drepung Monastery. Before dawn on the first day of the festival, tens of thousands of pilgrims and travellers gather on the hillside to witness a massive, centuries-old embroidered image of the Buddha being slowly and ceremoniously unfurled, a moment of profound spiritual power.

Following this solemn ritual, the festival transforms into a joyful, week-long celebration. The grounds of Norbulingka, the Dalai Lama’s former summer palace, become a sea of colourful tents as Tibetan families gather for elaborate picnics, feasting on yogurt and other delicacies. The air fills with the enchanting sounds of Tibetan opera (Ache Lhamo), with troupes from across the plateau competing in performances that last from morning until dusk.

This 8-day journey is designed to immerse you in every aspect of the Shoton Festival. You will witness the sacred dawn ceremony, explore Lhasa’s iconic cultural treasures, including the Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple, enjoy a day trip to the turquoise waters of sacred Lake Yamdrok, and have ample time to soak in the festive atmosphere, joining locals in their celebration. 2026 is the Year of the Fire Horse in the Tibetan calendar—a year of energy and auspicious beginnings, making it an exceptionally powerful time to witness this extraordinary event.
