Welcome to Lhasa, the sacred capital of Tibet! Upon your arrival at Lhasa Gonggar Airport or Lhasa Railway Station, your guide will greet you with a traditional Khata (white ceremonial scarf) and escort you to your hotel in the city. The drive from the airport to Lhasa takes approximately one hour, following the Lhasa River through scenic valleys.

The remainder of the day is dedicated to rest and acclimatisation to the high altitude. At 3,650 meters, Lhasa demands respect—it is essential to take things easy, drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol, and allow your body to adjust. This morning, we explore Tibet's most iconic landmark: the magnificent Potala Palace. Perched atop Marpo Ri hill, this UNESCO World Heritage site was originally constructed in the 7th century by King Songtsen Gampo and later expanded to serve as the winter residence of the Dalai Lamas as well as the religious-political nexus of traditional Tibet. With its thousand rooms, chapels, tombs of the Dalai Lamas, and stunning views over Lhasa, the Potala offers a fascinating glimpse into Tibet's religious and political history.

In the afternoon, we visit the Jokhang Temple, the holiest shrine in Tibet. Built in 647, it is the earliest wood-and-masonry structure still existing in Tibet and houses the revered Jowo Shakyamuni Buddha statue, brought to Tibet by Princess Wencheng. Here, thousands of pilgrims come daily to worship, prostrating themselves in devotion.

We then step outside to join the pilgrims on the sacred kora (circumambulation) around Barkhor Street, the bustling pilgrim circuit surrounding the Jokhang. This vibrant market teems with religious artefacts, traditional crafts, and local specialities—a perfect place to observe Tibetan life and perhaps purchase souvenirs. Overnight in Lhasa.

Today we explore two of Lhasa's great monastic institutions in preparation for tomorrow's festival. We begin at Drepung Monastery, once the world's largest monastery, often referred to as the "Nalanda of Tibet." Founded in 1416, this sprawling complex was home to over 10,000 monks at its peak and remains a vital centre of Buddhist learning. It is here, on the hillside above the monastery, that tomorrow's giant Thangka will be unveiled.

In the afternoon, we visit Sera Monastery, founded in the 15th century and one of the six great monasteries of the Gelugpa order. With roses planted throughout the complex, it is also called "the court of wild roses." Here, we witness the famous monastic debates, a lively and intellectual spectacle where monks sharpen their philosophical understanding through dramatic question-and-answer sessions, punctuated by synchronised hand-claps. This tradition, dating back centuries, remains an essential part of monastic education.

This is the day you've been waiting for. We rise well before dawn (around 4:00-5:00 AM) to travel to Drepung Monastery for the single most spectacular event of the Shoton Festival: the unveiling of the giant Thangka.

As the first light of dawn touches the Himalayas, a profound hush falls over the thousands of pilgrims and visitors gathered on the hillside. The air is crisp and filled with the scent of juniper incense. Suddenly, the deep, resonant sound of long Tibetan horns (dungchen) echoes through the valley. A procession of monks appears, carrying a massive, rolled-up Thangka—an embroidered silk tapestry depicting Sakyamuni Buddha, measuring over 500 square meters.

Slowly, ceremoniously, the monks unfurl the giant image down the hillside, covering it in a protective silk veil. At the auspicious moment, the veil is drawn back, revealing the sacred image to the rising sun and the devoted crowd. Thousands of white Khata (ceremonial scarves) are thrown into the air as an offering, and the monks begin their deep, resonant chanting. This moment of collective devotion, set against the stark beauty of the Tibetan landscape, is one of the most powerful religious scenes in the Buddhist world.

After about two hours, the Thangka is carefully rolled up and returned to the monastery. Following the ceremony, we return to Lhasa for a late breakfast and a chance to rest.

In the afternoon, the festival shifts from solemn ritual to joyful celebration. We head to Norbulingka, the "Jewel Park" and former summer palace of the Dalai Lamas. This sprawling garden has been transformed into a massive picnic ground, dotted with thousands of colourful tents erected by Tibetan families. Here, you can:

· Watch performances of Tibetan opera (Ache Lhamo) , featuring performers in magnificent costumes and masks, telling stories based on Buddhist teachings and Tibetan history.
· Wander through the "tent city," where the smell of yak butter tea and the sound of laughter fill the air.
· Sample the festival's namesake yogurt, thick and tangy, served in wooden bowls.
· Perhaps witness the optional yak races or horse racing that sometimes take place on the outskirts of the city.

Today we return to Norbulingka for a full day of immersion in the festival's cultural heart. While the Thangka unveiling is the opening act, Tibetan opera is the soul of the week-long celebration.

Tibetan opera, with a history of over 600 years, is recognised as an intangible cultural heritage. During the Shoton Festival, opera troupes from across Tibet—and from neighbouring Tibetan areas in Qinghai, Sichuan, and Gansu—gather in Norbulingka to perform. The performances are all-day affairs, starting in the late morning and continuing until dusk. Even without understanding the Tibetan language, you can appreciate the rhythm, the haunting melodies, the symbolic choreography, and the emotional depth of the performances.

Between opera acts, you have time to explore the park further, enjoy a picnic lunch (we recommend bringing your own supplies to join in the local tradition), and interact with the friendly Tibetan families celebrating their biggest holiday of the year. Many will be delighted to share food and conversation with respectful visitors.

In the evening, you may wish to return to Barkhor Street, which remains lively throughout the festival, with vendors selling festival treats and souvenirs. Overnight in Lhasa.

After two intense days of festival celebration, today offers a gentle escape into Tibet's stunning natural landscape. We drive south, crossing the dramatic Kampa La pass (4,794m), to behold the breathtaking turquoise expanse of Yamdrok Lake (Yamdrok Tso), one of Tibet's three holiest lakes.

The lake's pincer-shaped turquoise waters stretch beneath the massive massif of Mount Nojin Kangtsang (7,191m). We'll stop at multiple viewpoints and, if conditions permit, descend to the lakeshore where local Tibetans gather to pray and make offerings. The serene beauty of the lake provides a perfect counterpoint to the bustling energy of the past days.

We return to Lhasa in the late afternoon. The remainder of the evening is free for you to rest or perhaps enjoy a final wander through the festival grounds as the celebrations wind down. Overnight in Lhasa.

· Climbing to Chokpori Hill (Medicine King Mountain) for the classic panoramic view of the Potala Palace.
· Visiting the Tibet Museum for a deeper historical context.
· Exploring the peaceful Ani Sangkhung Nunnery, a garden-like sanctuary in the city centre where nuns print prayer books using traditional methods.
· Visiting Ramoche Temple, considered the sister temple to the Jokhang and an important site in its own right.
