Founded in 1349 by a disciple of the renowned Buddhist master Tsongkhapa, this dramatic complex clings to a mountainside at an altitude of over 3,000 meters, offering commanding views of the Yellow River valley below.
The monastery’s name means “the place of the divine eagle” in Tibetan, reflecting its perch on a cliff that resembles a soaring bird. For centuries, it has been a centre of Buddhist learning and pilgrimage, attracting devotees from across the plateau. Unlike more tourist-oriented sites, Xiaqiong retains an authentic, contemplative atmosphere where visitors can experience living Tibetan Buddhism away from the crowds.
