Xiaqiong Monastery, located in Hualong County approximately 110 kilometres from Xining, is one of the most important Gelugpa monasteries in the Amdo region. Founded in 1349 by a disciple of the renowned Buddhist master Tsongkhapa, this dramatic complex clings to a mountainside at an altitude of over 3,000 meters, offering commanding views of the Yellow River valley below.

The monastery’s name means “the place of the divine eagle” in Tibetan, reflecting its perch on a cliff that resembles a soaring bird. For centuries, it has been a centre of Buddhist learning and pilgrimage, attracting devotees from across the plateau. Qinghai Lake, known in Tibetan as “Tso ngonpo” (Blue Lake), stretches across 4,500 square kilometres at an altitude of 3,200 meters.
