Kham Nomadic Life Experience Tour

Live with Tibetan Herders on the “Roof of the World”: An Authentic Encounter with the Last Nomads of Eastern Tibet

Welcome to the Kham region of Sichuan—a land of dramatic contrasts where snow-capped peaks pierce the clouds, vast grasslands stretch to the horizon, and a resilient people have maintained their ancient way of life for centuries. This is the homeland of the Khampa nomads, legendary throughout Tibet for their fierce independence, deep connection to the land, and unwavering hospitality.

This 8-day expedition offers a rare and authentic opportunity to step into the daily life of a Tibetan nomadic family in the high grasslands of western Sichuan. You will not merely observe from a distance; you will participate. You will rise with the sun to help milk the yaks, learn the ancient art of making butter and yogurt, try your hand at throwing the traditional “Urdö” (woollen whip), and gather around the hearth fire in a black yak-hair tent as stories are shared under a canopy of stars.

Beginning and ending in the vibrant metropolis of Chengdu, this journey follows the legendary G318 National Highway into the heart of the Khampa homeland. You will ascend from the Sichuan Basin to the high plateau, crossing dramatic passes like Zheduo Shan (4,300m) and traversing the famous Tagong Grassland—known in Tibetan as the “land favoured by the Bodhisattva”. Here, at elevations averaging over 3,700 meters, you will encounter a way of life that has remained largely unchanged for millennia.

In recent years, villages like Odamenba Village in Kangding have pioneered a new model of cultural tourism, where traditional animal husbandry is seamlessly blended with immersive visitor experiences. Local families now welcome travellers into their world, offering opportunities for horseback riding, (pasture camping), and hands-on participation in daily nomadic chores while preserving the authenticity of their ancient culture.

This is not a luxury tour. It is a journey into a way of life that is rapidly changing, an encounter with people whose hospitality is as vast as the grasslands they call home. It is for the traveller who seeks not just to see Tibet, but to feel it.
