Tibetan Spiritual Journey: In Search of Happiness and Well-being

Tour Theme: A Pilgrimage of the Mind – Discovering Inner Peace in Amdo

“As the land nearest the sky, Tibet holds the secret to happiness.”

In the high valleys of Eastern Tibet, where the air is thin and the mountains touch the clouds, you’ll find some of the world’s happiest people. Their secret lies not in material wealth, but in a spiritual tradition that has flourished here for over a millennium. This 7-day journey invites you to step beyond tourism and into a living laboratory of the mind.

Designed for seekers of all faiths—or none—this unique itinerary blends monastery visits, forest retreats, and guided meditations with the daily rhythms of Tibetan Buddhist practice. Walk the world’s longest prayer wheel corridor in mindful awareness. Sit with accomplished monks and learn techniques of loving-kindness and sensory meditation. Consult a traditional Tibetan physician for wisdom on balancing body and spirit. Witness the profound ritual of sky burial and contemplate the nature of self. Descend from an ancient mountaintop monastery into a vast valley carved by the Yellow River. Paint with a young monk-artist in a serene forest hermitage.

This is not a tour. It is a transformation.

Over seven days, you will traverse the spiritual heartland of Amdo (now Qinghai and Gansu provinces), moving from the monastic grandeur of Labrang to the sacred forests of Kamra and the teaching courtyards of Dzitsa Gonpa. Each day is themed around a core Buddhist concept—mindfulness, compassion, selflessness, emptiness, peace, love—and brings you into direct contact with living masters who embody these qualities. You’ll hike through grasslands where eagles soar above ancient sky burial sites, cross the Yellow River by ferry, and sleep in wooden cabins under star-filled skies. By journey’s end, you will carry home not just photographs, but practices and perspectives that can nourish you for a lifetime.

Highlights

  • Labrang Monastery: Explore the most important Tibetan Buddhist university outside Lhasa, home to six colleges and the world's longest prayer wheel corridor (1,813 wheels). Practice mindfulness as you walk the 3km pilgrim path.
  • Encounter with Monks: Meet face-to-face with accomplished practitioners who will guide you in loving-kindness meditation, sensory awareness, and the art of letting go.
  • Sky Burial Site at Trakkar Gompa: Witness (or learn about) the profound ritual of "giving one's body back to nature" against the dramatic backdrop of a white rocky cliff—a direct lesson in selflessness.
  • Shachong Monastery & Valley Descent: Stand where the great Tsongkhapa studied as a child, then hike 700m down from a mountaintop monastery to the Yellow River, experiencing "emptiness" as the horizon unfolds step by step.
  • Kamra Forest Retreat: Spend a day in serene woodland with a young monk who is also an oil painter. Learn to use art and the five senses as gateways to inner peace.
  • Dzitsa Gonpa ("The Second Nalanda"): Visit a monastery renowned for its rigorous philosophical training. Watch monks debate and ask them your own questions about love, unity, and the nature of reality.
  • Traditional Tibetan Medicine Consultation: Receive personalised advice from an Amchi (Tibetan physician) on maintaining balance in your body according to ancient principles.
