Morning: Visit the stunning Kumbum Monastery (Ta'er Si). As the birthplace of Tsongkhapa, founder of the Gelug (Yellow Hat) sect, this monastery is a masterpiece of Tibetan architecture. Morning: Drive south through the beautiful grasslands of Gannan.
Afternoon: Arrive in Langmu Si, a unique town straddling the border of Gansu and Sichuan provinces. Here, you will find two monasteries facing each other across a small stream: the Gansu monastery (Gelug sect), perched on a cliff and the Sichuan monastery. Explore both, and if time permits, hike up to the meditation caves overlooking the town for panoramic views.

Morning: Enjoy a sunrise walk on the grassland or a visit to the nearby meditation caves before departing.
Afternoon: Travel to Hezuo, the capital of the Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. Visit the striking Milarepa Temple (Nine-Story Buddha Hall). Afternoon: Embark on a scenic 1-hour boat cruise across the turquoise waters of the Liujiaxia Reservoir to reach the Bingling Temple Grottoes (Bingling Si). This UNESCO World Heritage Site features over 180 caves and niches carved into a dramatic cliff face along the Yellow River. Witness the fusion of Buddhist art spanning 1,600 years, from the Western Qin Dynasty to the Ming Dynasty, including the massive 27-meter-tall Maitreya Buddha from the Tang Dynasty.

A: The best time is from May to October. During these months, the weather is mild, and all sites, including Bingling Temple (which is only accessible by boat), are open. July and August are the warmest but also the wettest. June to August features beautiful green grasslands. September and October offer crisp air and autumn colours.
A: Most of the journey is at altitudes between 2,200m and 3,200m. Langmusi is the highest point at 3,400m. We recommend:
· Taking it easy for the first two days.
· Drinking plenty of water.
· Avoiding alcohol and heavy meals initially.
· Consulting your doctor about altitude sickness medication (e.g., Diamox) before you travel.
