Expedition Through Eastern Kingdoms

14 Days

Headline: The Kham Passage: From Chengdu to Xining – A 14-Day Expedition Through Tibet’s Forgotten Eastern Kingdoms

Travel Theme: Where the Yangtze is Born and the Dharma Travels – A Journey Through the Soul of Kham

Tagline: Follow the ancient pilgrimage trail from the bamboo forests of Sichuan to the source of the Yellow River. Discover monasteries carved into mountains, the world’s largest Mani stone pile, and the sacred throne of Amnye Machen.

This is not merely a route across a map; it is a passage through the living heart of Kham, the rugged and fiercely independent eastern realm of the Tibetan Plateau. Over fourteen days, you will traverse a landscape of staggering diversity—from the coniferous forests of western Sichuan to the high-altitude deserts of Qinghai, from the roaring gorges of the Jinsha River to the glassy expanse of Qinghai Lake. This is a journey designed for the true connoisseur of Tibetan culture, the photographer seeking untouched vistas, and the traveller who yearns to walk where few have walked before.

Your odyssey begins in the tea-horse trading hub of Kangding and ascends to the sacred grasslands of Tagong, where the golden stupa bows to Yala Snow Mountain. You will breathe the thin air of Litang, the “City of the Sky,” and venture deep into the hidden valleys of Baiyu, home to the red fortress of one of Tibet’s most important Nyingma monasteries. You will stand in the hallowed halls of Dzongsar Monastery, touch the centuries-old woodblocks of the Dege Sutra Printing House, and add your own stone to the colossal prayer wall at Maniganggo. Crossing into Qinghai, you will walk among the 25,000 stone slabs of the Sershul Mani Wall, explore the resilient spirit of Yushu, and finally, stand in awe before the sacred peak of Amnye Machen—the “Grandfather of the Yellow River”—before descending to the sapphire waters of Qinghai Lake and concluding in the vibrant city of Xining.

This is a journey into the soul of Eastern Tibet—a land where every mountain is a deity, every stone is a prayer, and every bend in the road reveals another chapter in the epic story of the Tibetan people.

Tour Type: Deep Cultural Expedition & High-Altitude Overland Journey

  • Difficulty Level: Strenuous. This is one of the most demanding itineraries offered. It involves:
  • Sustained high altitude (3,500m – 4,600m for most of the journey, with passes above 5,000m).
  • Long driving days (5-7 hours) on remote, sometimes rough roads.
  • Basic accommodation in many remote areas (Maniganggo, Madoi, Baiyu).
  • Significant temperature variations.
  • Altitude Range: Chengdu (500m) → Xining (2,275m) → Sustained 3,500m-4,600m → Passes up to 6,168m (Que’er Shan).
  • Best Time to Travel: Late May to Mid-October. September and October are ideal for clear skies and visibility of peaks like Anemaqen. July-August is warmer but can have more rain and cloud cover.
  • Suitable For: Experienced high-altitude travellers only. This is not a first-time trip to the Tibetan Plateau. Ideal for those with previous experience in Tibet, Ladakh, or the high Andes. Requires excellent physical fitness, strong mental resilience, and a deep appreciation for remote, challenging travel.
