Every summer, this remote region of Qinghai Province transforms into a dazzling spectacle of colour, sound, and thundering hooves as thousands of Khampa and Amdo Tibetans gather for what many consider the largest and most spectacular horse racing festival in all of Tibet.
The Yushu Horse Racing Festival, held annually from July 25 to 31, is far more than a sporting event—it is a living expression of Tibetan identity, a celebration of nomadic culture, and a reunion of communities spread across the vast grasslands. For one week, the sweeping Jiegu Grassland outside Yushu City becomes a temporary city of thousands of white and colourful tents, stretching for kilometres along the valley slopes—a sight so spectacular it has been described as a “tent city” unlike anywhere else on the plateau.
This is the land of the Khampa people, renowned throughout Tibet for their fierce independence and legendary equestrian skills. Here, you will witness riders performing death-defying feats at full gallop—firing muskets with perfect timing, dragging their bodies across the meadow hooked only by their boots, and demonstrating the horsemanship that has been passed down through generations since the days of the legendary King Gesar.
But the festival offers far more than horse racing. You’ll see yak racing, a tradition dating back to the Tang Dynasty, when it was introduced to celebrate the marriage of Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo and Princess Wencheng. You’ll marvel at Tibetan archery, wrestling, traditional opera, and perhaps most spectacularly, the Tibetan costume exhibition—a living fashion show where local Tibetans don their finest heirloom jewellery and most exquisite traditional dress.
