Journey to the Birthplace of the Tibetan People: First Palace, First Monastery, and the Sacred Oracle Lake
Welcome to Shannan (Lhoka) —the true birthplace of Tibetan civilisation. Nestled in the fertile Yarlung Valley, this is where the first Tibetan king descended from heaven, where the first barley was planted, where the first palace was built, and where the first monastery established Buddhism on the Tibetan Plateau. If Lhasa is the heart of Tibet, Shannan is its very soul.
Located about 150 kilometres southeast of Lhasa, Shannan Prefecture encompasses the cultural heartland of the ancient Tibetan Yarlung Dynasty. Here, at a comfortable altitude of 3,500–3,700 meters, you’ll walk in the footsteps of Songtsen Gampo, visit the summer palace where he and Princess Wencheng spent their days, and stand before the thousand-year-old murals that tell the story of Tibet’s conversion to Buddhism.
Unlike the bustling streets of Lhasa or the dramatic peaks of Everest, Shannan offers a quieter, more contemplative journey. This is a land of ancient tombs, sacred lakes, and living traditions that have remained unchanged for centuries. You’ll visit the legendary Yumbulagang Palace—Tibet’s first building—perched like a fairy-tale castle on a ridge above emerald fields. You’ll explore Samye Monastery, the country’s first Buddhist monastery, designed as a mandala and still radiating spiritual power after 1,200 years. For the adventurous, a pilgrimage to Lhamo La-tso—the Oracle Lake where Dalai Lamas have sought visions of their future incarnations—offers a rare glimpse into Tibet’s most secret spiritual traditions.
This 7-day journey begins and ends in Lhasa, with a deep immersion into the Yarlung Valley and the sacred mountains of southern Tibet. Whether you’re a history buff, a spiritual seeker, or simply someone who wants to understand where Tibetans “come from,” this tour will take you to the very source.
