Saga Dawa Festival Tour

The Holiest Month in Tibet: Commemorating Buddha’s Birth, Enlightenment, and Parinirvana

Welcome to the most sacred month in the Tibetan Buddhist calendar—Saga Dawa. The name itself comes from two Tibetan words: “Saga” refers to a bright star, and “Dawa” means month. This is the fourth month of the Tibetan lunar calendar, a time when the entire Tibetan Plateau transforms into a living expression of faith, compassion, and spiritual renewal.

The Saga Dawa Festival (also known as Saka Dawa) commemorates three of the most significant events in the life of Lord Buddha: his birth, his enlightenment, and his Parinirvana (passing into final nirvana). These three events, remarkably, are believed to have occurred on the same day—the 15th day of the fourth Tibetan month.

For Tibetan Buddhists, the entire fourth month is considered the “Month of Merits,” but the 15th day—the festival’s climax—is believed to be a time when the effects of one’s actions are multiplied an extraordinary 100,000 times. This profound belief transforms Tibet during Saga Dawa. Pilgrims converge on Lhasa from across the plateau, circumambulating the city’s sacred sites, offering alms to monks and beggars, releasing captive animals as acts of compassion, and abstaining from meat.

Nowhere is the festival more dramatically observed than at the foot of Mount Kailash, the most sacred mountain in Asia. Thousands of pilgrims gather at Tarboche Flag Pole for the spectacular annual flagpole-erecting ceremony, replacing the massive prayer flag pole with a new one wrapped in tens of thousands of colourful prayer flags—a sight of breathtaking devotion.

This journey begins and ends in Lhasa, allowing you to immerse yourself in the spiritual heart of Tibet before venturing to the sacred mountain. Whether you join pilgrims circling the Jokhang Temple on Lhasa’s ancient paths or witness the flagpole ceremony at Mount Kailash, this tour offers an unparalleled window into the living faith of Tibet.
