Journey Through the Living Traditions of Northeastern Tibet
Welcome to Amdo—the northeastern jewel of the Tibetan Plateau and a region where Tibetan Buddhist culture has flourished for centuries in relative obscurity. Unlike the restricted areas of the Tibet Autonomous Region, Amdo (spanning parts of modern-day Qinghai and Gansu provinces) offers travellers unparalleled access to living Tibetan traditions without the need for special permits. This is a land of vast grasslands, snow-capped sacred mountains, and monasteries that have served as centres of learning and artistic expression for generations.
This carefully crafted journey begins in Xining, the capital of Qinghai Province, and ends in Lanzhou, the capital of Gansu—two cities that have historically served as gateways to the Tibetan world along the ancient Silk Road. Along the way, you will immerse yourself in the artistic heart of Amdo, from the thangka painting studios of Rebkong (Tongren) to the scholarly halls of Labrang Monastery, one of the six great seats of Gelugpa Buddhism.
Amdo has produced some of Tibet’s most influential figures, including the great scholar Gendün Chöpel, and remains a region where nomadic traditions and monastic scholarship coexist in harmony. Here, you won’t just observe Tibetan culture—you’ll experience it firsthand: walking prayer flag-lined kora paths, sharing butter tea with monks, and witnessing artisans create sacred art using techniques passed down through generations.
