Architectural Wonder: The Integrated Watchtower Homes
The architecture of Jiaju is unique. The buildings, known as “watchtower homesteads” (Diaolou Zhaifang), are a masterful fusion of residential homes and ancient watchtowers. These structures typically have three or four floors. The ground level is often for livestock, while the upper floors contain living quarters, a kitchen, and a sacred scripture hall. The white-walled houses are adorned with traditional Tibetan symbols and are crowned by roofs painted with distinctive bands of white, black, and yellow, a hallmark of the local Gyarong Tibetan culture.
The Ancient Watchtowers and Local Culture
Danba is often called the “Kingdom of a Thousand Watchtowers” . Scattered throughout the landscape surrounding Jiaju are ancient stone watchtowers, some over a thousand years old. These towering structures, which once served for defence and communication, now stand as silent guardians of history. The area is also famously known as the “Beauty Valley” (meiren gu), a name inspired by the region’s beautiful women, a trait legend links to the ancient matriarchal Dongnu Kingdom (Eastern Kingdom of Women). This unique cultural heritage is celebrated through vibrant local festivals, including grand coming-of-age ceremonies for girls.
