Monlam (Great Prayer) Festival Tour

Witness the Holiest Month in Amdo: A Journey Through Living Buddhism, Sacred Art, and Ancient Rituals

Welcome to the Monlam (Great Prayer) Festival—the most sacred and visually spectacular time of the year in the Tibetan Buddhist world. Known in Tibetan as “Monlam Chenmo,” this 15-day religious observance transforms the monasteries and villages of Amdo into living theatres of faith, art, and ancient tradition.

Established in 1409 by the great Buddhist reformer Je Tsongkhapa, the Monlam Festival was originally conceived as a gathering to pray for world peace and the flourishing of the Buddha’s teachings. Over six centuries, this tradition has spread across the Tibetan Plateau, finding particularly fertile ground in the Amdo region—the birthplace of Tsongkhapa himself.

This 12-day journey takes you deep into the heart of Amdo during the festival’s most powerful days. Beginning in Xining, the capital of Qinghai Province, we travel first to Tongren (Regong)—the “Golden Valley” and a UNESCO-recognised cradle of Tibetan Buddhist art. Here, in the villages of Upper and Lower Wutun, you will witness master thangka painters and sculptors at work, their families preserving techniques passed down through generations for over 700 years. The nearby Guomari Village offers a glimpse into ancient Tibetan village life, with its distinctive fortress-like houses and the towering Guomari Great Stupa, one of the largest in the region.

From Regong, we journey to the legendary Labrang Monastery in Xiahe—one of the six great seats of the Gelugpa order, often called the “World’s Tibetan Studies University” for its renowned scholarly tradition. Here, on the 13th day of the first Tibetan month, we witness the breathtaking Giant Thangka Unveiling, as a massive silk appliqué image of the Buddha is dramatically unfurled on the hillside. At the same time, thousands of pilgrims offer white khatas and prostrate in devotion.

On the 14th day, we travel to Xicang Monastery in Luqu County to experience the dazzling “Display of Treasures” —a unique event where all 12 surrounding Tibetan tribes gather in their most elaborate heirloom costumes, parading their most precious possessions in a stunning display of cultural pride. The festival culminates on the 15th day at Labrang Monastery with the Butter Lamp Festival, where monks display intricate sculptures crafted from colored yak butter, illuminated by thousands of flickering butter lamps under the full moon.

This journey is a pilgrimage for the eyes and the soul—an immersion into a living tradition where art, faith, and community intertwine. It begins in Xining and concludes in Lanzhou, offering a complete circuit through the most sacred sites of the Amdo region during the holiest month of the Tibetan year.
