Jiuzhaigou Valley: A Journey Through China’s Fairy-tale World of Rainbows and Water

Travel Theme: Where Waters Paint Rainbows — A Pilgrimage to the “Garden of Eden” on the Tibetan Plateau

Tagline: If there is a wonderland on earth, Jiuzhaigou must be one of them. Come find your reflection in its sacred turquoise lakes.

Hidden deep in the mountains of western China’s Sichuan Province, along the eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau, lies a primitive and dreamy valley called Jiuzhaigou. Its name, meaning “Nine-Village Valley,” comes from the nine Tibetan villages scattered throughout its breathtaking landscape. This is a place that has preserved one of the most stunning views of nature, earning it the “China’s Garden of Eden”.

Jiuzhaigou is renowned for its dreamlike scenery: crystal-clear turquoise lakes, thunderous waterfalls, verdant forests, and snow-covered peaks. The secret of the lakes’ incredible colours—shades of white, blue, green, and emerald—lies in the spirogyra, charophyte, and other ferns that grow in the water, their chlorophyll creating a mesmerising palette that changes with the season, light, and viewing angle. Over 108 of these colourful highland lakes are dotted across the valley’s three main gullies, each more enchanting than the last.

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992 and a World Biosphere Reserve, Jiuzhaigou is not just a feast for the eyes; it is also a sanctuary for biodiversity, home to over 220 bird species and numerous endangered plants and animals. This journey from the ancient Silk Road hub of Lanzhou to this fairy-tale realm offers a seamless transition from the stark beauty of the Gansu corridor to the lush, watercolour wonders of Sichuan, providing a profound encounter with nature at its most sublime.
